How to write a case study
Case studies can be a brilliant way to promote your business. A case study paints a picture of what it’s like to work with you and gives prospective clients a real insight into the benefits of your product or service. Here’s how to create one. First of all, you should choose a client for whom you did a great job. One where they saw demonstrably outstanding results from working with you. Did your product help them increase sales or cut costs by 50%? Has your advice helped them win more customers or boost employee engagement by a measurable amount? If so, that’s something to shout about! If you’ve worked for a well-known brand, that’s a great choice too. The bigger and more famous the name, the more impressive you’ll look to prospective clients. You’ll also need a client who’s willing and able to talk enthusiastically about what your product or service did for them. Some companies, especially bigger ones, like to be discreet about who they work with. So you’ll need to choose a client who’s willing to give you written permission to be featured in a case study. And you’ll probably want to get written sign-off from them for the final text. You’ll also need the client’s co-operation when it comes to creating the case study - because you’ll need to interview them to get their perspective on your business and how it helped them. A typical case study is relatively short - typically no longer than a page - or around 500-750 words. So you’re going to want to cram all the good stuff into that short space. Here’s a three-part structure that I’ve used that distills the key points you want to get across in any case study. Start by briefly outlining the challenge the client faced when they came to them. In this section you explain who the client was and describe their problem. Did they need to make more sales? Cut costs? Get better at communicating? Or something else altogether? What’s the bigger picture background. Did they face an industry shift that you helped them respond to? Whatever it is, here you want to talk about your client’s pain points - what they needed your help with. Next, the solution - how your product or service addressed the client’s pain. Here you talk about how you solved the problem - and how you approached it. This is a chance to shout about what was unique about your product or service that allowed you to help the client get rid of their problem. Finally, we come to the outcome. Did your product allow them to increase in their sales or lower their costs - and if so, by how much? Or maybe you helped your client increase customer satisfaction. If so, provide the facts and figures - or even customer quotes - that support this claim. If you’re a social media consultant, did your advice allow them to boost engagement on Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest? If so, provide the data that proves you made a measurable difference. Whatever it is, you want to provide the proof - the facts and figures - that demonstrate you made a measurable difference to your client’s business. To create your case study, you’re going to have to pick up the phone and talk to your client. Even if you’re confident you know the ins and outs of what you did for the client, it’s still important to get the story in their words. That way, you may uncover unexpected benefits they got out of work from you. Or an angle you hadn’t considered that’s likely to resonate with other prospective clients. Here’s what to ask your client to solicit the best content for your case study. Taking each section of you case study in turn, let’s start with the challenge. Questions you can ask to create content for this section might include: Why did you approach us for help? What problem were you facing? What effect was the problem having on your business? What made you choose us over our competitors? Next, the solution. Here you can ask things like: How did you find working with us? What did you like about our approach? Why was our proposed solution right for your business? Finally, ask them about the outcome of the work. So things like: What difference has our product/service made to your business? How have you measured that difference? Are there any facts and figures that illustrate the impact our product or service has had on your business? When you write the case study up, keep the text short, punchy and jargon free. Keep your paragraphs and sentences short. And break the text up into its three constituent parts, with a subheading for each section. Countless sales gurus told me this when I first began selling. I’d start by explaining a feature of my product, such as “My product is made of titanium,” and then I would relate the benefit of that feature, as in “Because it’s titanium it’s super strong and will last three times longer than the competition while weighing half as much!” Classic feature-benefit presentation. This sales approach was first developed in 1887—and it hasn’t changed much since them. At the time, it was a revolutionary sales approach. And while the feature and benefit approach to selling was effective for many decades—maybe even a century—it’s time to acknowledge that this approach is outdated today. Prospects expect you to use this approach, and it’s perceived as boring and uninspiring. Why? Because it’s all about you, not them. It’s time to toss the features and benefits presentation and start using the case study presentation instead. In this video, I’m going to show you the must-know keys to any great case study presentation. VIDEO SUMMARY 1. People want results and stories, not features and benefits. By sharing case studies that relate to your prospects’ situations, you're showing that you really understand what's going on. You also get the opportunity to share past results without being sales-y. A case study is basically a fancy way of telling your prospects stories of other clients that you've had that were similar. It doesn't have to be complex. It can actually be formulaic and relatable to your prospect. 2. Create four to six different case studies for different types of presentations. Most organizations have a few different types of ideal clients. Let's say that you have two really distinct types of clients. That means you should have at least two case studies for each type of client. A total of, let’s say, four case studies to get started. This doesn't have to be laborious or take that much time. Instead, just dig into your client list and create a list of your top few success stories. These should be organizations or people that you really helped accomplish something special. By the way, don't feel like you have to use the company's name. It's not a necessity. What matters most is what we will focus on next. 3. Be sure to really focus on the challenges and results. The most important part of any case study is the list of challenges that your past clients have faced. Briefly describe what you did for those clients, and explain the results they accomplished as a result of working with you. By breaking down each case study this way, you now have a compelling story to tell during your presentation. Any presentation shouldn't need more than two case studies—but they create a powerful flow to lead the prospect through that presentation. Remember, the result you share should be specific. Give real numbers, like, "Increased revenue by 24%" or, "Decreased employee turnover by 31%" or, "Increased customer retention by 11%." 4. Relate the case studies to your prospect’s situation. Now that you have your case studies, it's time to use them in your presentation and relate them to your prospect’s current situation. It might sound like this: “George, let me share with you an example of another client that had a similar set of issues to you. They were dealing with X, Y, and Z. Much like we're discussing with you, we came in and developed ABC. As a result of that work, they were able to increase top-line revenues by 12% and profits by 18% in the first year.”

How to analyze an income statement - Walmart example (case study)
Introduction to the income statement. This income statement tutorial shows you how to get started with reviewing the income statement of a company, the same way I would do it with participants in one of my finance for non-financial manager courses. Here is Walmart’s (NYSE: WMT) income statement, or profit and loss statement (P&L) for the fiscal years ended January 31st, 2017, 2016 and 2015. 2017 is on the left, 2015 on the right. The income statement can be found in the annual report. There is a lot of information here, we need to set priorities on which items we are going to dive into, to get the most valuable use of our analysis time. My proposal would be to first dive into the revenue performance, which seems to have dropped from 2015 to 2016, and then has come back up in 2017. What are the main drivers for revenue? Next I would look into the margin performance. How have gross margin, operating margin, and net income developed in relation to the fluctuations in revenue? As retail is traditionally a fairly low margin industry, every penny counts. Net Income is almost 9 billion dollars lower than Operating Income, let’s review what is going on in the interest and tax lines. Requirements: Need to be able to change the purchase price and % debt and stock used... but cash and the foregone interest on cash are unnecessary, which simplifies things. Also, they've given us incomplete information in a few spots and we need to go through and calculate some figures for Company A and Company B, such as the shares outstanding. SKIP the formatting! Step 2: Enter the financial information for Company A and Company B. Fairly straightforward, but remember that we need to calculate a few additional numbers for this to work, such as the shares outstanding for each company and the Net Income and EPS, at least for the buyer. Step 3: Calculate the "missing information" - Net Income, EPS, and Share Counts. Start with Pre-Tax Income, then calculate Net Income based on the tax rates for both companies, and then EPS... not completely necessary for Company B, but definitely need it for Company A. Then, calculate the Share Count for both companies and the Enterprise Value (just for reference). Step 4: Go up to the top and enter the key assumptions, starting with Question #1. To save time, skip the (1 + Premium) * Share Price * # Shares calculation and just calculate the purchase price based on the premium to Company B's Market Cap instead -- same result either way. Calculate %s for debt and stock, then the amount of debt raised, debt interest rate, and shares issued. Then, fill in the information about the synergies -- no information on expenses here, so we leave it out. Step 5: Combine the Income Statements for Company A and Company B. Start with the Synergies, and then combine all the other line items, factoring in those synergies on top. Remember to factor in acquisition effects, such as additional interest expense. Calculate down to EPS, making sure you include the NEW shares issued in the transaction and increase Company A's share count as appropriate. Step 6: Calculate Accretion / (Dilution) and the Pro-Forma Credit Stats. Take the combined company's EPS and divide by the buyer's EPS and subtract 1. For the credit stats, the two key ones are the Leverage Ratio (Net Debt / EBITDA here) and the Coverage Ratio (EBITDA / Interest) - so calculate those each year. Step 7: Create sensitivities... if you have time. Here, we would argue it's pointless since it takes more time and effort to set them up, and they don't save much time beyond the model we already have -- so we're skipping this step. Step 8: What is the POINT of this case study exercise? Takeaway #1: Even if we pay a higher premium for a seller, the deal might be MORE accretive depending on the purchase method... debt tends to be less expensive than stock. Takeaway #2: Company B is a very cheap asset -- MUCH lower P / E and EV / EBITDA multiples than Company A. When a more expensive buyer acquires a much less expensive seller, the deal will almost always be accretive. Company B's significantly higher tax rate also makes a difference -- Company A gets "free money" after the acquisition since it's only paying 25% in taxes rather than 40%. Takeaway #3: Using debt tends to produce more accretion than stock, but it also produces higher leverage ratios and lower coverage ratios -- so there is a trade-off between accretion / (dilution) and the credit stats following the deal.

In order to try and provide information to build a formulation, the session moves faster than an average session might and does not include all aspects of standard CBT (e.g., agenda setting). An actor plays the character of Tom [Sam Newton], but the dialogue is not scripted, and as such this represents a natural therapeutic exchange.
