Mergers and Acquisitions - How Culture Can Make or Break Your Strategy - Part 1

55:50
In the current economy you will hear a number of words and phrases used when discussing M&A activity. Many are 'cautious' and waiting for the 'financing shortage' to loosen up. Where M&A's are discussed the recommendation is that they be 'well thought out' and 'carefully executed. Whether it is to enter new geographic markets, acquire new technologies, build scale or to gain access to lower cost operations -- M&A's remain a viable strategy. In fact several studies indicate that acquisitions made during a downturn outperform those made during more healthy economic climates on most relevant performance metrics. Regardless of the economic climate, having a sound due diligence process and a thoughtful culture integration process will help an organization avoid the most common cause of M&A failure...the 'culture clash.' Denison Consulting has played a role in a number of mergers and acquisitions, including some of the biggest corporate marriages of the past two decades. We have learned that there a number of activities that are critical to the culture integration process and we have developed a set of recommendations for addressing culture issues at various stages of M&A's.

Creating a Culture of Sustainability

59:10
To what extent is the appropriate organizational culture necessary to achieve your corporate sustainability objectives? Many scholars suggest that the pathway for achieving corporate sustainability is by creating a culture within their organization that values a sustainability framework from all aspects of the organization. It cannot be addressed by any single corporate action. Leading sustainability expert and author of Capitalism at the Crossroads, Stuart L. Hart, believes that when sustainability is viewed from the appropriate set of business lenses, leaders can create a culture to align their organization's strategies and people to improve performance and shareholder value. Join us to learn more about Hart's sustainability and strategy framework that helps leaders and organizations harmonize their concerns for the planet with their strategies for growth, innovation and profitability. Speaker Information Stuart L. Hart is the Samuel C. Johnson Chair in Sustainable Global Enterprise and Professor of Management at Cornell University's Johnson School of Management. He is also Founder and President of Enterprise for a Sustainable World. Professor Hart is one of the world's top authorities on the implications of environment and poverty for business strategy. He has published more than 70 papers and authored or edited seven books with over 5,000 Google Scholar citations in all. His article "Beyond Greening: Strategies for a Sustainable World" won the McKinsey Award for Best Article in the Harvard Business Review for 1997 and helped launch the movement for corporate sustainability. With C.K. Prahalad, Hart also wrote the pathbreaking 2002 article "The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid," which provided the first articulation of how business could profitably serve the needs of the four billion poor in the developing world. His best-selling book, Capitalism at the Crossroads, published in 2005 was selected by Cambridge University as one of the top 50 books on sustainability of all-time; the third edition of the book was published in 2010.

The Secrets of Successful Cultural Due Diligence

59:13
Many organizations that are considering an M&A as part of their competitive strategy understand that organizational culture is important, but don’t know how to best use it as a way to make informed decisions. Understanding the cultures of both the acquiring organization and the target firm can help inform the deal, highlight the integration challenges, and prepare for a smooth transition and successful integration. By performing cultural due diligence, organizations can proactively avoid the pitfalls of 'culture clash' during the M&A process and uncover key issues that can impede negotiations and integrations.

How Leaders Drive Culture Change with Clarity

01:00:20
Description: How do you change the culture of an organization? As leaders in our organizations, we are bombarded daily with ideas from books, magazines, consultants, blogs, etc. on this topic. We must also take into consideration a wide variety of feedback from our own organization and customers. Leaders need to understand a range of approaches for driving culture change, and then develop a clear, organized plan to confidently drive that change as an integral part of business improvement. Tim Kuppler, President of AL-KO Kober North America, is no stranger to sifting through the enormous amounts of resources and devising strategies to drive business performance. His experiences as a leader in several roles across two organizations has led him to focus on four key steps to driving culture transformation and achieving optimal performance from his team. Kuppler will share his unique approach with examples for driving a united approach to culture change that directly supports business improvement goals. Speaker's information: Tim Kuppler is the North America President of AL-KO Kober Corporation. AL-KO is a global supplier of axles, brakes and other components for the trailer (RV, construction, utility, horse, etc.) industry. Tim has utilized Denison tools for nearly 10 years as part of regional and global organizations. Whirlpool : Talent + Culture = Performance

56:29
Imagine a world where new leaders have an accurate picture of the operation they are recruited to lead from the moment they accept the position—an understanding of cultural strengths and weaknesses that enables them to rapidly yet effectively produce the results they were hired to deliver. At Whirlpool Corporation, this vision is becoming a reality. Now catalyzed by an innovative new tool, the Culture Snapshot, Whirlpool's onboarding program is transforming the often daunting leader transition challenge into a competitive advantage. As talented leaders enter new positions, they rarely have the same understanding of the role and operational performance climate as their hiring managers and other key stakeholders—a gap in understanding that contributes to misalignment of efforts, poor performance and leader derailment. By measuring the perceived culture of a new leader's operation from the view of selected stakeholders (including Hiring Managers, Direct Reports, Skip-level Reports, Peers and Others), Culture Snapshot helps newly-placed leaders translate objective data into meaningful action. In this webcast, Whirlpool's Mark Markram, Human Resources Director of Talent and Organization Development, will share how adding culture to the talent equation is driving higher levels of performance from new leaders, and ultimately, from the corporation.

Your Leadership Story

58:22
The culture of an organization lives in the stories told by its people. Storytelling is an important tool for leaders to be effective and inspire their teams, but as Tim Tobin, VP of Global Leadership and Development at Marriott International points out, many leaders today aren’t aware of the story their own leadership is telling. Listen as Tobin shows how leaders can more consciously shape the impact they have on the world by taking control of their leadership story. By thinking of their career as a narrative – with a plot, characters, and an arc – leaders can become more effective, insightful and inspiring through an increased awareness of themselves. Once their story is written and understood, Tobin shares when, where and how leaders can communicate it.

Aligning Strategy Human Capital at the National Health Service

58:44
The mission of NHS (National Health Service) County Durham & Darlington, who employs 400 staff to commission services on behalf of 600,000 people in the North of England UK, is "to deliver excellence today for a healthier tomorrow." To achieve their mission, they wanted to understand: was their culture supporting or hindering their ability to achieve their vision of improving the health status of their population? Through an organizational culture initiative that began in April of 2009, they began to explore their culture and address short, mid and long term opportunities to align their employees with their strategies. They adopted the Denison Model as a key framework to organize all interventions and to align the development strategy within the organization. In an organization that is constantly under the political spot light and open to change, Denison has provided a consistent framework to underpin the changing demands placed upon it. Now, however, the NHS faces its biggest 'restructuring' to date. The new push in accountability for the organization is squarely focused on achieving the desired outcomes for patients rather than on process. The NHS of the future has been given a challenge to focus on the customer. Learn more about how NHS has aligned their strategy and people and how they are meeting this challenge in this engaging webinar. Presented by Karen Jones Corporate Improvement Team Leader, National Health System County Durham, UK Trained as a nurse, Karen Jones currently sits within corporate improvement in a commissioning organisation where she takes the lead on coaching, culture and corporate projects within public health. She leads the work on completing and reviewing the Denison cultural audit survey, establishing and embedding the corporate story and the art of story telling and the importance of authentic leadership and emotional intelligence to performance.
